Lively South Tahoe Resort Casino with AAA Four Diamond Dining

Friday night's revelers are still up. It's no longer Friday night—it’s nearly 7 on Saturday morning—and yet here they are, reveling. Surrounded by spilled drinks and discarded napkins, four never-say-die partiers are collapsed in hysterics on the banquette that forms the perimeter of the open-air bar at HQ, MontBleu Resort Casino & Spa's stylish boîte overlooking its 24-hour casino.

On the casino floor, gamblers wander beneath spiraling, golden light fixtures as the silvery jingle of slot machines fills the air. Other visitors find respite in the grottos of the indoor heated pool and in the deep leather chairs of the cigar shop, where Chris, a bearded, lanky employee perpetually whirling about the shop, proffers miniature chocolates, bottled water, and even occasional cigars gratis.

In premiere rooms upstairs, the high-energy excitement is replaced by the serenity of a king-size bed laden with white pillows. Mountain or lake views peek in through the windows. In the rose-marble-bedecked bathrooms, his and hers sinks accommodate the toothbrushing schedules of significant others and stunt doubles.

When hunger calls, the crown jewel of Montbleu's restaurants answers: Ciera, a AAA Four Diamond steakhouse, serves a lineup of steaks and chops augmented by seafood such as the buttery lump crab cake. The maitre d', Tommy, offers a ready, toothy grin alongside recommendations from a selection of 300 wines and champagnes.

South Tahoe: Vegas-Style Glitz in Alpine Paradise

At night, the neon letters of MontBleu's sign compete for attention with a legion of lights glittering along South Lake Tahoe's strip of casinos. An elevator lit with red and white bulbs slides up and down the external wall of Harvey's like a tethered rocket ship, and the horse and jockey statue outside Harrah's beckons to photo takers and orphaned bookies alike.

At daybreak, the lights dim and the sparkling waters of Lake Tahoe take center stage. A short walk from MontBleu takes travelers to Heavenly Village, a timber-lined resort and shopping complex that operates a mountain gondola offering breathtaking views of the lake—which never freezes but does provoke heavy, lake-effect snowfall across the Nevada-California border. The glass-walled gondola cars sail over rugged mountain faces, ascending 3,000 feet to the summit, where skiing, dining, and après-ski parties await.

Romantic Hotel Perched on Bluff Above Columbia River Gorge

The 90-mile Columbia Gorge has a hypnotic beauty, its landscape speckled with crashing waterfalls and towering bluffs. A romantic boutique hotel residing 200 feet above this river, the Columbia Cliff Villas present a prime view of this scenery. The Carriage House villas outfit 600 square feet of handsome living space with colonial and contemporary furnishings. A gray stone backsplash colors the space in between stainless-steel appliances and the cedar-wood cabinets in the corner kitchen. Stationed on the second floor, the villa's private balcony frames partial views of the frothy Columbia River. Just past swinging glass doors, there's a flickering gas fireplace in the living room.

Hood River: Riverside Town with Majestic Mountain Views

Sitting at the crossroads of the Columbia River Gorge and the Cascade Mountain range, Hood River's unique geological makeup and diversity of microclimates have made it hospitable to vineyard grapes. The town rests at the heart of the Columbia Gorge Wine Valley, a 40-mile stretch that shares its longitudes with some of the most prolific wine regions in Europe. Downtown boasts a number of restored Victorian and craftsman homes, and features more than 40 buildings that date back to 1893. The 2,150-acre Mount Hood Meadows Ski Resort offers elevations as high as 7,300 feet and slopes for beginners and experienced skiers alike. Hotel guests receive discounted open-to-close lift tickets to the resort.

During a tour of the interstate valley, guests will sample award-winning wines from vineyards such as Cathedral Ridge, a charming estate that produces velvety red blends, and Maryhill Winery whose cabernets and sauvignon blancs earned it the title of Washington Winery of the Year in 2009.

Like garden weeds, nails continue to grow no matter how frequently you nibble on them. Tend your digital plots with today's Groupon: for $29, you get a mani-pedi package from Debbie at Versailles Salon & Spa (a $72.95 total value). The package includes:

  • Spa manicure (a $20 value).
  • Spa pedicure (a $40 value).
  • An 8-ounce bottle of Majestic Essentials hydrating lotion (a $12.95 value).

  • At Versailles Salon & Spa, nail artist Debbie shapes nails, massages extremities, and adorns fingertips and toe tips with new polish and hydrating lotion. The 40-minute spa manicure renews dogged digits with exfoliation and moisturizers as Debbie trims cuticles and shapes nails. A massage from the elbows down soothes stress stemming from shattering every lamp in sight in search of genies, and a polish change revivifies nails. During the 50-minute pedicure, patrons fall back into plush chairs, submerging feet in a swirling bath. Double-edged exfoliation with a foot file and sugar scrub preps pores for a moisturizing deluge in advance of a lower-leg massage and cuticle treatment. After nails are filed into shape, layers of polish protect them from being mistaken for lost M&M'S. An 8-ounce bottle of Majestic Essentials hydrating lotion from Debbie's personal product line is used during both massages and tags along on the journey home, enticing noses with natural oils and delicious scents such as spiced cranberry. In addition to her basic digit diligence services, Debbie glams up feet and hands with Rock Star Toes upgrade services ($15) and chip-free, Shellac-polish manicures ($8) Tuesdays through Saturdays.

Giving yourself a massage, like throwing yourself a surprise birthday party or asking for your own hand in marriage, is a surefire disappointment. Leave kneading to the knowledgeable with today's Groupon to Serendipity Day Spa & Wellness Center in Riverbank. Choose between the following options:

  • For $37, you get an aromatherapy massage (a $75 value).
  • For $55, you get a candy-cane sweet-body-treat body wrap (a $110 value).

  • The staff at Serendipity Day Spa & Wellness Center kneads tender tissues with therapeutic aromatherapy massages and cleanses musculatures with invigorating body wraps that make use of beautifying serums culled from natural ingredients. Using light to medium pressure, the aromatherapy massage dissipates stress storms with fragrant essential oils. The torso-tranquilizing procedure helps to exile toxins while encouraging lymphatic flow and untying muscles that have french-braided themselves for picture day.

Fresh organic peppermint and spearmint extracts enliven skin during the candy-cane sweet body treat, stimulating circulation with their tingly juices even as the extracts help to lift away impurities and oils from the skin’s surface. Vanilla’s warm aroma infuses the treatment with a festive scent that boosts the holiday spirit with less hassle than going caroling or nailing stockings to one’s computer monitor.

Cabin-Style Suites Above Massive Indoor Water Park

High above Fort Mackenzie—the four-story waterlogged treehouse that feels like a mixture of Swiss Family Robinson and Pirates of the Caribbean—a 1,000-gallon bucket slowly fills with water. Suddenly, the big bucket topples, drenching those gathered below in a torrent of water. Heated to a balmy 84 degrees, Great Wolf Lodge Grand Mound’s indoor water park sports nearly a dozen splash-filled attractions, including a wave pool, a six-story funnel slide, and a Hot Springs warming pool.

The 56,000-square-foot aquatic arena is merely one of the many activities at the hotel's multi-entertainment campus. At the MagiQuest live-action adventure, kids wield magic wands and journey through a kingdom to meet mythical creatures, including a pixie, a dragon, and a Bob Dylan. Teens will gravitate toward gr8_space, a trendy hangout lit with midnight-blue and green lights where they can play video games or dance to the music of a live DJ. Scooops Kid Spa gives manicures and pedicures to pint-size patrons sitting atop ice-cream-cone stools and banana-split thrones—free ice cream predictably and happily completes each visit.

Up to six bear cubs and adults can comfortably slumber in the rustic Grizzly Bear or Majestic Bear suites. Daily itineraries can be planned atop tall chairs surrounding a hexagonal breakfast table. Each of Great Wolf Lodge’s three spacious premium suites accommodates up to eight guests.

Thurston County, Washington: Nature and History Near Olympia's Hub

Near the southernmost tip of Puget Sound lies Thurston County, a diverse terrain anchored by the state capital in Olympia. The Chehalis Centralia Railroad & Museum pays tribute to its railroad-heavy history with steam-powered-locomotive tours that chug along the Chehalis River and past Mount Rainier. Nature preserves such as the Mima Mounds Natural Area Preserve sprawl over the South Sound's hills, providing a habitat for endangered wildlife, indigenous plants, and nature's vicious teddy-bear population. In downtown Centralia, old-fashioned streetlights glow as shoppers stroll to outlet stores and antiques shops in search of vintage knickknacks.

Family Friendly Hotel at the Foothills of Red Rock Country

The gnarled fingers of a red rock formation pierce the vast desert sky, as if an earthen giant had reached for the sun and turned to stone. Smaller orange buttes also speckle the vistas from the private guest-room balcony, one of many vantage points from which to admire the dramatic landscape surrounding Los Abrigados Resort & Spa. Stationed at the foothills of Red Rock Country along the banks of Oak Creek, this 22-acre property abounds with outdoor pleasantries, from its manicured walkways to cobblestone water fountains and groves of leafy trees that flourish in stark contrast to the arid peaks.

Plush, white loungers fringe the year-round heated saltwater pool, encouraging a head start on summer reading reports. Elsewhere on the Mediterranean-style property, tennis courts, bocce courts, and an 18-hole mini-golf course offer up hours of diversion. One-bedroom suites come with homey amenities such as well-furnished partial kitchens and spacious dens filled with natural light.

At the onsite Stakes & Sticks Sports Bar and Grill, wood-fired ovens bake pizzas golden brown in the company of 20 flat-screen TVs. Decidedly quieter afternoons are spent at the spa, where a variety of body wraps, massages, and aromatherapy treatments usher in tranquility as pleasantly as a flock of doves cooing Perry Como.

Sedona: Majestic Red Rock Formations Inspire Thriving Arts Center

When the sun rises and sets over Sedona—which enjoys an average of 330 sunny days per year—the surrounding red rock buttes radiate a phosphorous glow. The mountain trails and rugged canyons of Coconino National Forest offer an abundance of hiking, biking, and climbing opportunities. A hike along Airport Mesa Trail, 2 miles south of the hotel, affords panoramic views of this fiery silhouette punctuated by the spindly towers of Cathedral Rock and the slopes of Capitol Butte. Sedona's striking landscape has attracted an eclectic community of artists, many of whom display their work in Tlaquepaque. Modeled after a traditional Mexican village, this vibrant, cobblestoned arts district boasts more than 40 specialty shops and galleries, all within a mile of the hotel.

Opulent, Eco-Conscious Coastal Resort with Old World Charm

When night falls, a constellation of twinkling outdoor fireplaces lights up a darkened, 100-acre expanse of Pacific Ocean coastline. Vacationers huddle near the warmth of their fires—a modern-day analog to the encampments of early Spanish explorers who discovered the Palos Verdes Peninsula several hundred years ago. Terranea Resort pays tribute to its first European settlers with a Mediterranean design incorporating red adobe roofs, large palms, and archways inlaid with colorful mosaic tiles.

The resort also maintains an eco-friendly focus; its grounds are comprised of roughly 75% green space, including a 2-mile Discovery Trail affording occasional views of gray whales performing graceful offshore line dances from December to April. The resort's emphasis on nature extends to lushly appointed ocean-view rooms and casita suites, which are accented with golden-hued woods and seashells of all sizes. Floor-to-ceiling glass doors open onto private balconies overlooking the water.

The resort's 50,000-square-foot glass-walled fitness center and spa offers state-of-the-art cardio equipment as well as daily classes, including yoga and seaside spin sessions, during which participants pedal stationary bikes on an outdoor terrace facing Catalina Island. Golfers tee off on The Links at Terranea, a nine-hole, par 3 course dotted with indigenous Californian plants, and water lovers loll by one of three ocean-view pools or shoot down the 140-foot water slide.

Among the resort's many dining options, mar'sel—an upscale, oceanfront eatery—serves flavorful dishes crafted by chef Michael Fiorelli using sustainable methods and local ingredients, including fresh herbs plucked from a garden guests pass on their way in.

Rancho Palos Verdes, California: Secluded Town Abounding with Outdoor Activities

Nestled in the hills of the Palos Verdes Peninsula, secluded Rancho Palos Verdes is home to expansive estates set on jagged bluffs looming over the coastline. Terranea's Pointe Discovery adventure shop equips visitors for exploring all the peninsula has to offer, including standup paddleboarding, kayaking, snorkeling, and mermaid speed dating. Fewer than 2 miles from the resort, the Abalone Cove Shoreline Park, a state ecological preserve, encompasses pristine tide pools home to sea stars, pointy urchins, and brightly colored anemones.

Within walking distance of the cove lies Wayfarers Chapel, a structure built from glass and redwoods by Lloyd Wright, son of pioneering architect Frank Lloyd Wright. The Point Vicente Lighthouse also stands nearby. First lit in 1926 as a beacon to mariners aiming to steer clear of rocky shoals, the lighthouse now makes an ideal spot for whale-watching.

Greater Dallas/Fort Worth: Scenic Landscapes and Arty Flair

The Dallas Arboretum & Botanical Gardens makes for a relaxing escape, as its verdant 66-acre property along White Rock Lake is rife with seasonal flowers, shrubs, trees, and plants. Holiday décor at the arboretum includes seven fairy-tale castle exhibits, such as Beauty and the Beast and Rapunzel. Families can pose for photos and juggle glass slippers inside Cinderella's enchanted holiday carriage, harnessed to two topiary horses.

Because of Dallas's relatively temperate climate, the outdoor Nasher Sculpture Center stays open year-round. On display through January 8 is Tony Cragg: Seeing Things, a collection of approximately 30 large, modern sculptures that speckle the park with vibrant colors and unusual shapes.
