Wine Tours Through Heart of Niagara's Wine Region

Row after row of carefully cultivated grapevines stretch toward the horizon, presenting a pastoral view obstructed only occasionally by wineries where vintners transform the fields' harvest into lip-smacking vintages. Crush on Niagara Wine Tours organizes getaways designed to immerse visitors in this grape-lover's paradise located in quiet, rural Ontario.

Both the Overnight in Wine Country and the Baby It's Cold Outside! tours pick up oenophiles from the Harvest Guest Cottage in a luxe passenger van in the early afternoon for leisurely, half-day outings. Tours cruise the Niagara-area countryside, stopping at four well-known wineries for tastings, ice-wine beverages, nibbles of local artisan cheeses, and a production of the musical Stomp performed by barefoot vintners. A $25 CAN dining credit to the award-winning restaurant at Vineland Estates Winery, one of the stops on the tour, contributes to a delicious evening.

After a day spent imbibing reds and whites, guests return to the quaint cottage, adorned with gleaming hardwood floors and cozy décor, and make their way to the Acacia, Twilight, Waterbury, or Woodward room. Each room's comfortable queen- or double-size bed comes dressed in smart, high-thread-count sheets and a fluffy duvet. Understated wooden furniture lends a casually elegant air. Though each room is different, they all come with a private bathroom and cheerful, sunshine-colored walls.

The house's spacious living room features a TV, a selection of movies, and a crackling fireplace. In the morning, a lavish continental breakfast waits in the kitchen, and the patio out back makes an excellent spot for watching the sun rise over a bucolic vineyard.

Beamsville, Ontario: Niagara Vineyards and Stunning Scenery

In addition to winery tours, the Niagara region offers a number of ways to enjoy the fresh air and scenic splendor. Niagara Falls is a short drive away, and guided horseback rides along the Niagara Escarpment provide a look at the area's untouched forests. A nearby working maple-syrup farm offers tours and classes in maple sugaring and houses documents revealing Mrs. Butterworth's maiden name. The closest town, Beamsville, boasts local and sustainable fare in many of its surprisingly chic restaurants.

Massage is considered the most effective form of sports therapy, narrowly beating out acupuncture, orange-juice IVs, and hot chicken-soup baths. Give your tension-laden muscles the best with today’s Groupon: for $75, you get two 90-minute therapeutic massages at Handworks Massage LLC in East Lansing (up to a $160 value).

Handworks’ owner and certified massage therapist Scott Stearns administers purposeful bodywork customized to help assuage physical and emotional stress or accelerate injury recovery. His 90-minute massages may incorporate multiple modalities to coax knotted muscles and bunched connective tissues into being more flexible and resuming their at-ease positions. During the treatment, interactive discussion gives clients insight into Scott’s holistic techniques and efforts to ease the body-wide taxation from activities such as sports training, professional labor, and giving a piggyback ride to an adorable 5-year-old SUV. Sessions forgo the scented candles and heavy oil bastings of traditional spas in favor of an athletically inspired space with massagee-chosen tunes, sparing applications of organic jojoba oil, and a table topped with an ergonomic bodyCushion for cloud-like comfort.

Though Handworks Massage LLC sometimes features a discounted price online, this Groupon still offers the best deal available.

Quirky, Eclectic B & B with Extravagant Breakfasts

Collections of glazed ceramics, vintage cameras, and wooden back massagers fill every nook and cranny of Ray's Bucktown Bed and Breakfast, a testament to owner Ray Reiss’s various passions and interests. Given the intriguing knickknacks and the framed photos lining the walls—a vestige of the days when the building was Ray's photography studio—the inn can seem less like a traditional B & B than an eccentrically curated cabinet of wonders.

Among homey touches in the main living room, a whiteboard displays the week's weather as well as sketches of resident felines Maggie and Rocky. Eleven cozy guest rooms evince a careful attention to detail. "My Aunt Velma made this quilt," says Ray, pointing out a tawny patchwork blanket. Though each room offers a unique layout, all of them have capacious windows and many boast whirlpool tubs and antique furnishings. In the Da Vinci room, a pair of skylights illuminates bookshelf-lined beds, and the Chickadee room displays original paintings. It sits in the recently renovated north wing, which connects to the central building via a TV den papered with Bucktown Art Fest posters.

Downstairs, a steam room and wood-paneled sauna warm bodies and help snowmen slim down during chilly winter evenings. The next day, chefs whip up breakfast beneath racks of cast-iron pans, serving anything from the extensive menu at any hour of the morning. Main dishes, such as goat-cheese-and-mushroom omelets or mascarpone-stuffed french toast, pair with bacon, sausage, and rosemary-encrusted roasted red potatoes. Throughout the day, complimentary coffee, tea, and bottled water are available.

Bucktown, Chicago: Trendy Residential Neighborhood Northwest of the Loop

The ivy-covered brick façade of Ray's blends into a quiet residential section of the trendy Bucktown neighborhood, where blocks of brownstones share space with artists' lofts, epicurean restaurants, and fashionable boutiques. At night, Bucktown and its adjacent neighborhood, Wicker Park, spring to life with live-music joints and hip bars headed by skilled mixologists armed with a full battery of bitters. As a former hub of Polish immigrant culture, the area also hosts magnificent, ornament-laden churches in the Polish Cathedral style.

Of course, Chicago's many landmarks are only an el ride away. In the Loop, the Art Institute of Chicago showcases iconic masterworks such as Edward Hopper's Nighthawks and Cezanne's Still Life with Cell Phones, and just outside in Millennium Park, skaters swirl beneath sparkling skyscrapers at the McCormick Tribune Ice Rink.

Cabin-Style Suites Above Massive Indoor Water Park

High above Fort Mackenzie—the four-story waterlogged treehouse that feels like a mixture of Swiss Family Robinson and Pirates of the Caribbean —a 1,000-gallon bucket slowly fills with water. Suddenly, the big bucket topples, drenching those gathered below in a torrent of water. Heated to a balmy 84 degrees, Great Wolf Lodge’s indoor water park sports more than 10 splash-filled attractions, including a wave pool, a Crooked Creek lazy river, and two Hot Springs warming pools.

The 79,000-square-foot aquatic arena is merely one of the many activities at the hotel's multi-entertainment campus. At the MagiQuest live-action adventure, kids wield magic wands and journey through a kingdom to meet mythical creatures, including a pixie, a dragon, and a Bob Dylan. More than 100 games such as skee-ball and virtual pinochle flash and whirl in the Northern Lights Arcade, with prizes and games geared toward all ages. Scooops Kid Spa gives manicures and pedicures to pint-size patrons sitting atop ice-cream-cone stools and banana-split thrones—free ice cream predictably and happily completes each visit.

Up to six bear cubs and adults can comfortably slumber in the rustic Majestic Bear suite. Daily itineraries can be planned atop tall chairs surrounding a hexagonal breakfast table. Each of Great Wolf Lodge’s spacious premium suites accommodates up to eight guests.

Cincinnati, Ohio: World-Class Art and History Along the Ohio River

The hilltop views from Cincinnati's art-influenced Mount Adams neighborhood reveals an impressive skyline nestled against the Ohio River, an organic confluence of urban achievement and natural beauty. For a scenic metropolitan experience, the 126-year-old Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden encompasses more than 65 acres with its impressive collection of flora and fauna. Visitors can marvel at the zoo's exotic felines, which includes white tigers and snow leopards. In the multisensory Night Hunters exhibit, one experiences nocturnal predators such as vampire bats, Burmese pythons, and caffeinated teenagers.

A variety of museums plus an Omnimax Theater are housed in an art-deco railroad terminal built in 1933 at the Cincinnati Museum Center. The interactive exhibits at the Duke Energy Children's Museum include a simulated farm and a woodland adventure. The Museum of Natural History & Science looks back 19,000 years to the Ice Age, and the Cincinnati History Museum features a replica of a 94-foot side-wheel steamboat.

Traverse City: The Charming Cherry Capital of the World

One of USA Today ’s 10 Great Places for Local Wines, Traverse City draws visitors year-round with its fine riesling wines siphoned from grape gorges in the fertile Old Mission Peninsula. Tucked between the pinky and index finger on the hand-shaped state of Michigan, the proclaimed "Cherry Capital of the World" is bordered by scenic Grand Traverse Bay to the north and the sprawling Traverse City State Forest Area to the east. The town's downtown and waterfront thrives with gourmet restaurants and local landmarks, such as State Theatre, a recently restored art-house cinema built in 1949—families will want to drop by for the 25-cent Saturday-morning matinee. A drive north up the peninsula eventually ends at the whitewashed Old Mission Point Lighthouse, a local relic originally constructed in 1870.
