Sophisticated Inn Mixing Old-Fashioned Elegance with Impeccable Service

Rising from her perch at the dark wood desk in the reception area, Andria, the inn’s proprietor, greets guests as they arrive. She distributes a modest set of metal keys with a friendly smile; the warm, old-fashioned hospitality spills over into every nook and cranny of The Inn at 213 Seventeen Mile Drive, a cozy bed and breakfast brimming with authentic Victorian charm.

An antique cider press is stationed at the foot of a carpeted staircase that ascends to individually decorated rooms on the second floor. Hand-painted signage indicates the entrance to the Avocet room, an Asian-style room adorned with Eastern landscape paintings and red oriental rugs. Across from the king-size bed, french double doors open onto a white wood balcony that overlooks wildflowers in the private garden. The Sanderling room evokes Victorian sophistication with 1920s furnishings and corset-lined crinoline bathrobes, and a three-paneled window looks to Monterey Bay.

Throughout the day, aromas waft from the kitchen and the dining parlor, where a spread of gourmet hors d'oeuvres can be paired with red and white wines. The pre-dinner bites can also be enjoyed by the fireplace in an intimate colonial library. In the morning, inspired breakfast creations are prepared, including cheese-filled egg puffs, which shed their delicate layers like Russian nesting dolls to reveal pristine yolk centerpieces.

Pacific Grove, California: Victorian Splendor and Whimsical Charm on the Coast

Nestled between Monterey and Pebble Beach, Pacific Grove takes up 3 square miles and takes a decidedly low profile in comparison to the town’s conspicuously lavish neighbors. The hotel sits at the corner of Lighthouse Avenue, an idyllic main street trimmed with antique shops, organic coffeehouses, praiseworthy restaurants, and pastel-colored homes that bisect the concentrated town center.

The area is also set up for dramatic vistas of ocean scenery. A recreational trail hugging the dramatic coastline serves as Pacific Grove's northern border; from the cliff’s edge of this bustling pedestrian highway, one can watch as dark waves crash off jagged rocks and baby seals roll in the sand.

Less than a mile west of the inn resides Asilomar State Beach & Conference Grounds. Here, coniferous woodlands, sandy dunes, and a wooden walkway stretch from the residential quarters to the white sand beach. From small, protected coves, visitors can yell at harbor seals and sea otters to autograph first-edition copies of Zoobooks.

Luxury Guest Rooms and Trendy Party Venues

Hard Rock Hotel and Casino takes its music so seriously that speakers have been hooked up below water. A heart-thumping guitar solo reverberates through the crystal-blue depths of the pool, as if whale songs have entered the era of rock 'n' roll. As floating palapas host rounds of swim-up blackjack, cocktail-sipping guests float along a lazy river that connects the Beach Club’s network of shallow pools. With a rotating roster of featured celebrities and a vibrant party scene, the sprawling poolside paradise epitomizes the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino's indulgent atmosphere and posh ambiance.

A central partition divides each of the HRH Tower's ultra-luxurious supreme king suites, with a 40-inch LCD television on either side. One screen faces a massive king bed trimmed in mahogany and leather, and the other screen looks toward a living area on the opposite end of the room, where guests can rummage through the cushions of a sweeping wraparound sofa for a rock star’s misplaced guitar picks and keys to the city. Huge picture windows frame the glittering cityscape below.

Throughout its complex of towers, Hard Rock Hotel encourages a variety of indulgences. Steam from saunas and hot tubs fills the Reliquary Spa, where therapists treat guests to everything from Swedish massages to organic facials. Thousands of lit crystals gleam from the Vanity Club's massive chandelier, which overlooks a sunken dance floor surrounded by more than 50 VIP booths in the 14,000-square-foot venue. At the LTO Pizza & More restaurant, diners dig into signature flatbread pizzas and savory steaks in a relaxed dining room set beneath a sprawling canopy of single-bulb chandeliers.

Las Vegas: An Adult Playground with Cultural Adventures

Though the casinos and shows of the Strip are well-documented, Las Vegas's cultural attractions are often undeservedly overlooked. The Marjorie Barrick Museum, a mile east of Hard Rock Hotel, stands as a testament to Latin American culture, with one of the most comprehensive collections of pre-Columbian art in the country. Fremont Street glitters like a diamond-studded diamond with a canopy of 12 million lights and costumed street performers. Lined with iconic casinos, flashing neon signs, and showgirls crowned with headdresses, this vintage boulevard evokes Vegas in the days of the Rat Pack. A massive, 90-foot LED screen hovers above its bustling avenue to broadcast music performances and the social-security numbers of recent jackpot winners.

Sophisticated Bayside Resort on Historical, Semitropical Landscape

Sometime in the 17th century, a handful of pink-sided cottages were erected along a peninsula on the western edge of Bermuda and settled by sailors. This area is documented as the first sailor colony on the island, and many of the dwellings—some nearly 300 years old— remain today, scattered over 30 acres of semitropical gardens and manicured lawns. In a nod to the colonial history of the peninsula it now occupies, Cambridge Beaches Resort & Spa’s coat of arms reads “Prima Et Optima," meaning "first and best." And today, the resort marries a sophisticated, adults-only atmosphere with nods to its seafaring past: within the border of four private beaches, there's a marina for sailing excursions, and an old sea captain’s house is now furnished with bars, drawing rooms, and eateries.

Tucked between Cambridge Beaches’ putting green and croquet lawn is Ocean Spa. During individual and couples treatments, European-trained massage therapists chase stress away using aromatherapy and products from high-end brands such as Sothys of Paris. Included in the package, visitors receive a $50 spa credit valid toward a manicure ($80), an Ocean Spa massage, which mollifies muscles with heated lava shells ($120), or any other 50-minute treatment.

The resort’s main cottage—a 200-year-old building—hosts a variety of eateries, highlighted by the upscale fine-dining establishment Tamarisk Restaurant & Terrace. Candles light up the dining room here; in the kitchen, chefs concoct international and French cuisine using seafood fresh off the dock, veggies from the resort’s garden, and ruby-encrusted salad tongs impounded from a nearby pirate. Meals comprise up to five courses, including appetizers of green shell mussels ($11) and entrees such as lemon- and truffle-spiked capon breast ($34). A winding stone path leads past a turtle terrarium to the Port O’ Call Bar, which is adjacent to Tamarisk and has a more relaxed ambiance, and its dark beams and roughly textured walls are reminiscent of a 17th-century English inn. The poolside Shutters Café also presents an alternative, serving casual lunch fare and overlooking the boats that skirt over Mangrove Bay.

Bermuda: Scenic Mid-Atlantic Archipelago with Rich History and Culture

Cambridge Beaches Resort & Spa lies on the placid west end of the Bermudan archipelago, which is lined with wildlife reserves and historical cultural attractions. Fewer than 10 minutes away, the Royal Naval Dockyard showcases centuries of Bermuda’s history, from architectural elements such as Victorian streetlights and 100-foot clock towers to a maritime museum. Formerly a major port for the British navy, this restored bastion now hosts a crafts market and arts center as well as a dock where ferries can transport passengers hourly to elect a sea turtle for Senate at the capital city of Hamilton.
