United Taekwondo Academy owner master Dure Chang draws upon her experience as a gold medalist in the Korea Open to guide students through a repertoire of tae kwon do techniques that bolster self-defense skills and self-esteem. Her month-long curriculum unveils proper kicking form and tests students’ mettle with poomsae bouts, in which students grapple with an invisible opponent to practice attacks, learn defense, and exact revenge on imaginary friends. Groups progress to one-step sparring sessions that put drills into practice and board-breaking exercises that imbue feet with the power and confidence to turn wood into splinters. The class schedule divvies up youth lessons by age and belt color but opens adult sessions to all levels, allowing white belts to gain valuable practice and black belts to finally win back their rainbow suspenders.
