Fully Furnished Cabins in Texas Countryside Abounding with Wildlife
Alpaca, camels, and strutting peacocks mill about the grounds of the Lehmann Legacy Ranch, as blackbuck antelope and bison occasionally saunter past. Guests of the BlissWood Bed and Breakfast can expect to encounter a menagerie of four-legged neighbors, but the animals aren't just for show: the inn sits on 650 acres of a working ranch, with towering oaks that predate the property’s first development in the 19th century. Owner Carol Davis decorates the cluster of fully furnished, freestanding country cabins herself, using antique furniture both passed down through her own family and procured on treasure hunts through Texas Hill Country antique shops.
A pair of travelers can retire to Oasis cabins, clustered around the conservatory, a Victorian greenhouse replete with waterfalls, a koi pond, and lush vegetation. One such Oasis lodge is the Aloha Cottage, which boasts a fireplace, queen-size bed, and a jacuzzi tub surrounded by a hand-painted mural of tropical parrots and flowers. Lodgers can also bunk in ranch houses such as the Log Cabin, a rustic retreat with patchwork quilts, stone fireplace, and turn-of-the-19th-century furnishings. Situated near the barn, the cabin affords guests a closer look at the ranch's animals as they enact Orwellian political allegories.
Once roused by the rooster arias, guests greet each day with a continental breakfast served in their private cabins and composed of bagels, muffins, yogurt, fresh fruit, coffee, and tea. A gazebo nestled on a verdant island in the middle of Enchanted Lake makes an ideal spot to host an afternoon picnic—which guests can book through the hostess—and admire the swans, ducks, and geese that call the pond home. The bed-and-breakfast owner also runs the nearby Carol's Cat Spring Restaurant, an intimate eatery serving up a fusion of Texan fare and fine cuisine every Friday and Saturday night.
Texas Hill Country: Rich in Outdoor Pursuits and Texas History
The ranch is situated in Cat Spring, one of the first German-American settlements in Texas. Nearby Washington-on-the-Brazos State Historic Site preserves Independence Hall, the site of the 1836 signing of the Texas Declaration of Independence. Barrington Living History Farm, located in the park, gives visitors a peek into the day-to-day life of rural Texans living in the area more than 150 years ago, and the five-pointed Star of the Republic Museum spans 10,000-square-feet of all things Texas, including historical artifacts and the Alamo's original shag carpeting.
