Mod Boutique Hotel in the Heart of Little Italy

The scent of freshly baked pizza seems to permeate the air in San Diego's Little Italy neighborhood, its streets dotted with red-and-white-striped restaurants. Crowds file in and out of the area's quaint shops, stopping in between to grab a quick cup of espresso at one of the cafés on India Street. Steps away from the vibrant shops, the stucco Porto Vista Hotel channels a fun, throwback vibe Frommer's calls "retro-Italian cool."

Upon your arrival, bartenders whip up two complimentary welcome drinks, drawing from ginger and elderflower essences as well as house-infused bacon vodka. Upstairs, cozy queen rooms are dominated by a floor-to-ceiling, '60s-style photograph taken by a local San Diego artist. The oversize image overlooks cushy pillow-top beds wrapped in crisp, white linens. Guests can snare wild frisbees from their window, which peers toward the glistening bay.

On the fourth floor of the Porto Vista, chefs at the Glass Door restaurant use local and seasonal ingredients to concoct inventive dishes such as duck-fat fries and prosciutto-seared salmon, which are served at communal tables amid wrought-iron lanterns and wall-to-wall waterfront views. Elsewhere, you can unwind at a rooftop sunset yoga class, get styled in the attached Evolve Salon, or explore the happening neighborhood just outside the Porto Vista's front doors.

San Diego: Foodie Heaven with Vibrant Neighborhoods

Little Italy's historical streets bustle with tourists and locals alike, who come especially for the good eats. Handmade gelato and golden pizza pies fill the storefronts of classic, Italian-style eateries. One dessert café, run by a Paris-trained pastry chef, regularly sees lines forming down the block in the early morning as diners stock up on flaky, buttery croissants and scones.

Less than a mile from the hotel, the massive USS Midway Museum lets visitors wander through a Navy aircraft carrier and immerse themselves in life on the high seas. To observe San Diego's funky neighborhoods up close, you can shadow a local mailman or rent electric bikes for full- or half-day adventures. Some of the most popular destinations within biking distance include SeaWorld and the San Diego Zoo, one of only four American zoos with giant pandas on display.

A quaint dinner menu begins with a daily selection of oysters on the half-shell ($3 each), and french onion soup topped with melted gruyere cheese ($8). Seared scallops in a ginger-soy reduction are joined by sautéed spinach and risotto ($22), and duck confit is served with sautéed spinach, duck-fat mashed potatoes, and a cherry demi-glace ($18). Classic cocktails such as Pimm’s Cup ($9) and whiskey sour ($10) are poured alongside a variety of beers and wines ($4–$16).

    Agustin Brasserie

Shucked from their shells at the raw bar, a daily selection of oysters travels from the open-air kitchen out into the dining room, where conversation buzzes beneath the high-hanging lights that cast a glow on an expansive leather banquette and dark wood paneling. Behind the long, white bar, the mixologists of Agustin Brasserie shake, stir, and pour a selection of classic cocktails alongside beers pulled from a chrome tap. Upstairs, an outdoor rooftop deck allows visitors to sip libations while watching the sunset. Crafting a simple, French-inspired menu consisting of staples such as duck confit, steak and frites, and roasted chicken, the Brasserie’s chefs construct simple, artful dishes that are at once delightfully complex and wholly accessible—much like cartoon drawings of quantum physics theories.

Self-Drive Tour of New Zealand and Fiji Island Escape

Though the islands of Oceania sit half a world away, they’ve captivated many North American travelers with lush flora, unique geography, and exotic indigenous wildlife. The islands’ diverse landscape ranges from New Zealand’s glaciers, volcanoes, and bubbling mud springs to the white-sand beaches along Fiji’s turquoise waters. With this deal from Pacific Holidays, you’ll set your own pace on a self-driving tour of New Zealand, before boarding a flight to spend the remainder of the trip in Fiji’s paradise-like setting. Click to view the full 11-day, 8-night itinerary.

Days 1–2: You’ll board the Air Pacific transpacific flight at LAX, and cross the International Date Line on day 2.

Days 3–7: On the third day, visitors arrive in Auckland and transfer to the Jucy Rental Car Depot. For the rest of the day, and the following four days, guests have free range to explore New Zealand’s North and South Islands on self-driving tours. Pacific Holidays staff can help guests structure itineraries, but suggested attractions include the North Island’s geothermal region, where waterfalls, hot springs, and mud geysers draw visitors to Rotorua and Taupo.

On the South Island, travelers can bungee jump, skydive, whitewater raft, and Zorb in Queenstown, known as the “Adventure Capital of the World.” Venture west into Fiorland National Park to see to Milford Sound, called the “eighth wonder of the world” by writer Rudyard Kipling for its spectacular waterfalls that tumble down cliffs into the Tasman Sea. Father north in the Westland Tai Poutini National Park, you can visit the renowned Fox Glacier and the Franz Josef Glacier.

With the included five-day Gold Pass, guests can retire to any of New Zealand’s Golden Chain motel locations, from a spot in Queenstown near Fiordland National Park to a post in Auckland.

Day 8: After returning your car to the Jucy Rentals Depot in Auckland, board a flight to Nadi International Airport (NAN) on the island of Fiji. Upon landing, Pacific Holidays staff provides a transfer to the Sonaisali Island Resort, located across the lagoon just a three-minute boat ride from the main island of Viti-Levu.

Days 9–10: The next two days are left up to you. Lounge on the beach, splash in the lagoon-style pool with swim-up bar, and dine in the hotel’s two restaurants and four bars. Through the hotel, guests can book excursions such as horseback riding, surf tours, or snorkeling.

Day 11: Guests are transferred to NAN for a flight back to LAX, where they will arrive on the same day after crossing over the International Date Line.

Facebook photos are like paintings in a museum: They're fun to look at, but unfortunately, you can't touch them -- or hang them on the walls in your home. Spring your snapshots from their electronic enclosure with help from Winkiwoo: Pay $5 (regularly $15) for a 20-page, 6x8-inch photo book created from Facebook photos. Spacious Suites on Historic WWII Air Base in the Heart of Scottsdale

Between 1942 and 1945, young WWII pilots took off and landed more than 600,000 times on the runways of the Thunderbird II Air Base, situated in the desert outside of Phoenix. Today, jetsetters of a different kind frequent the historic base, which has been repurposed as the Scottsdale Municipal Airport. The base also contains the Scottsdale Thunderbird Suites, a four-story, tawny stucco hotel. Soaring ceilings and thick oriental rugs welcome visitors at the grand entrance area, and there are nods to the property's aviation history throughout the hotel.

Considering its proximity to the runway, each of the hotel's standard suites is rather quiet. That's because each room has been soundproofed with thick concrete walls to reduce the sound of engines and the cries of babies that want their pilot's license 16 years ahead of schedule. All of the spacious suites include a living room and separate bedroom, as well as new, cushy couches and chairs to lend the room homey feel.

Before heading off to bed, stop by the lounge next to the Silver Wings Restaurant to grab a nightcap and browse the hotel’s WWII aviation memorabilia. Among the relics are photographs of pilots and a table crafted from an aircraft rotary-cylinder-engine top. In the morning, guests can fill up on eggs, bacon, pastries, and steaming coffee at the complimentary hot breakfast buffet.

Scottsdale, Arizona: High-End Shopping in the “The West’s Most Western Town”

Situated slightly northeast of Phoenix in the Sonoran Desert, Scottsdale was once a vast ranch lands lined with citrus farms and cowboy settlements, earning it the nickname of “The West’s Most Western Town.” Today, the lush desert oasis is studded with glittering outdoor fountains, emerald-green golf courses, and an active nightlife scene.

For many vacationers, "sightseeing" in Scottsdale translates to "window-shopping." A few steps from the hotel, wander past palm trees to find designer stores such as Cartier and Anthropologie. A few minutes away is the charming and quaint Old Town Scottsdale, where brick buildings offer a glimpse into how the town earned its “Most Western” moniker. Stroll down its winding streets to find art galleries, a mammoth used bookstore, and public sculptures on nearly every corner.

AAA Four Diamond Hotel South of Vegas Strip

Fewer than 10 miles south of the Las Vegas Strip, the Mediterranean-inspired Green Valley Ranch- Las Vegas cuts an imposing figure, with Spanish-style architecture, tiled roofs, and a recessed driveway lined with towering palms. You don’t have to worry about transportation to the city’s main corridor, thanks to a complimentary shuttle that runs back and forth from the strip four times a day. But there's a lot to do right here—the sprawling Green Valley Ranch- Las Vegas encompasses restaurants, pools, a casino, and a movie theater.

In the upscale casino, exposed stone columns support towering arches and a vaulted ceiling. Gamers have the run of the place, which offers 2,200 slot and video-poker games, a poker room, race and sports book areas, and more than 55 table games such as blackjack, craps, and roulette. Spend your winnings at one of eight onsite restaurants, including Hank's Fine Steaks & Martinis, known for its selection of aged meats, and Terra Verde, a cozy Italian eatery with house-made pasta dishes and an extensive wine list. Getaway holders can use their resort credit at the onsite spa for services such as massages, facials, and mani-pedis.

Green Valley Ranch- Las Vegas's outdoor recreation area stretches across more than 8 acres outfitted with manicured lawns, private cabanas, and infinity-edge dipping pools. Head to the Pond, the resort’s private pool and lounge, to see and be seen during pool-party season. Come nightfall, you can catch a live band at Ovation or slip into Drop Bar for a nightcap.

Greater Las Vegas: Shops and Restaurants Off the Strip

The town of Henderson is conveniently close to Las Vegas, but it's also far enough to be an escape from the bustle of the strip. Next to Green Valley Ranch- Las Vegas sits The District, a pedestrian-friendly promenade lined with boutiques and restaurants. On Friday and Saturday nights from May through October, enjoy live music as you stroll the plaza.

To head to the Strip, hop onto the resort's free shuttle, which drops riders off at the Mandalay Bay Hotel. If you're tired of gambling, check out one of the long-running shows, such as Cirque du Soleil's Love, an acrobatic and visually stunning homage to the Beatles.

Spacious Southwestern Suites in the Heart of Santa Fe

When you walk down the streets of downtown Santa Fe, it can feel more like a rustic Old West town than the thriving capital city of New Mexico. Some big businesses and skyscrapers have sprouted up throughout Santa Fe, to be sure, but right among them in the heart of downtown, you’ll see historical mission churches and adobe pueblos. It’s all set against the ruddy backdrop of the Sangre Cristo Mountains. Villas de Santa Fe are situated right in the foothills of these mountains‚ about 16 miles northeast of downtown. Warm, southwestern-style décor and well-appointed rooms make the property a comfy home base after you explore colorful downtown Santa Fe, which is rich in Native American and Mexican history.

Inside the pueblo-like villas, modern amenities complement the rustic and colorful decorative scheme. There’s Santa Fe–style art hanging on the walls in one of the standard one-bedroom suites, and you can find colorful woven fabrics on the couch in the separate living area. Each of these suites features a partial kitchen, where there’s a full-size refrigerator, a stovetop, and honey-colored wood cabinetry. It makes the place feel more like a comfy apartment than a hotel room.

After waking up to the bright sun of a Santa Fe morning, you can feel free to unwind in the outdoor hot tub or practice chasing after mail carriers on the treadmills in the onsite fitness center. The hotel also has a complimentary shuttle that can zip you around the property; that allows guests to save their energy for scenic walks through nearby downtown area.

Santa Fe, New Mexico: Old West Architecture and Fiery Southwestern Cuisine

Just a short walk from the Villas de Santa Fe, you’ll find the perpetually sun-soaked downtown area. It’s a historical center with a vibrant mosaic of cultural influences made up of fragments from the Native American, Latino, and western traditions. The 400-year-old site of the St. Francis Cathedral Basilica dons stained-glass windows, which cast rainbow colors onto the stone floor. Handmade leather treasures line the shelves at a custom-cowboy-boot store in the city.

Fiery chili is a standby garnish for chefs in Santa Fe; on a food tour of Santa Fe, you can sample zesty southwestern fare from popular local vendors. At day's end, the tour stops at the rooftop of a beloved downtown restaurant, where guests may sip a glass of wine, admire the brilliant sunset, and drop water balloons onto evil school principals.

New Mexico’s varied terrain and seemingly nonstop sunshine make the area a great place for hiking and biking. It’s worth it to visit the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, which have peaks that stand at about 12,000 feet high; they’re just a short trip from Villas de Santa Fe.

Among its accolades, Anthony’s counts the Award of Excellence from DiRoNA—the Distinguished Restaurants of North America—and the AAA Four Diamond Award. The restaurant has its chefs to thank for these awards, who tirelessly craft hand-made sausages, slice tender beef medallions, and roast duckling until its buttery and crispy.

Moving one's body to the rhythm of music is a natural human instinct, just like running from the sound of lightning or inventing a telephone. Dial up new moves with this Groupon.

    Choose from Three Options
  • $45 for an 11-week dance class scheduled from May 21 to August 4 (a $100 value)

  • $87 for a four-day Once Upon a Time fairy-tale camp for grades 3–8 (a $175 value), which takes place May 29–June 1, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

  • $97 for your choice between Bring It five-day intensive dance camp for grades 1-12 or a No Bullies! Get Real! camp (a $200 value). The Bring It camp runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on June 25–29. The bully-awareness camp takes place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m on June 4–8 for grades 3–8 and July 16–20 for grades 4–8.

  • During the 11-week dance program—which meets for one hour once a week—kids learn the fundamental steps of ballet, tap, jazz, lyrical, modern, or hip-hop dance. Meanwhile, the four-day Once Upon a Time camp transports youngsters to an imaginary world where they'll take on the roles of singing, dancing mythical creatures. Students will also break into small groups to craft their own fairy tale, which they'll perform for family members on the last day of camp. The five-day Bring It camp gathers kids of all ages and skill levels together to learn new dance steps under experienced instructors. Students cap off the week with a recital that reflects the many genres of dance they've studied.

Children get the opportunity to spread social awareness in the five-day No Bullies! Get Real! camp, during which they'll learn song and dance routines that explore solutions to the issue of bullying. The camp's outstanding performers will be chosen to participate in a small group ensemble that will travel to locations throughout the community to spread their positive message.

    KU Studios

Carol Sottosanti inherited her love of hitting high notes and cutting rugs from her father, an opera singer who inspired her to pursue a degree in vocal performance from the University of Arizona. Naturally, Carol wanted her children to also experience the beauty and exhilaration of performing on stage, but she couldn't find a program that would grant her kids the proper exposure and practice they needed. Teaming up with other moms in the community, Carol organized a few small shows starring the neighborhood's charismatic children, and subsequently, Kids Unlimited was born. Since its inception in 1986, KU Studios still produces shows regularly, preparing their young performers with various classes in vocal performance, dance, and acting. Aspiring triple threats can dive into a wide variety of camps designed to hone singing and dancing skills, while promoting awareness of important topics such as bullying or the proliferation of mimes in Tucson. KU's outstanding performers earn their way into small-group ensembles that perform regularly throughout the community.

Tours launch from two locations, the Rocking K Ranch and Westward Look Resort. The Rocking K Ranch sprawls across 3,300 acres in the Rincon Valley, riddled with Native American petroglyphs, panoramic views of mountain peaks, and dirt donated from philanthropic Mars civilizations. Humans and horse compatriots embark on short jaunts or half-day rides, complete with lunch, and gallop between the prickly prongs of Saguaro cacti and herds of grazing cattle and hungry rock formations. Nestled in the foothills of the Catalina Mountains, Westward Look Resort affords breathtaking views of mountain peaks and the Tucson valley.

A 36"x54" front window could be clothed in GrandCell honeycomb shades ($158) or bask in Transitions faux-wood blinds' aura of quaint rusticity ($104). Alternatively, a set of 84"x84" vertical blinds (about $185) can adorn a patio entryway or a pet dragon's oversized doggie door. Blinds are made to size rather than cut, ensuring a snug, shapely fit to your window's sexy curves. Though required shipping costs (most products are $13.25–$25.25/unit) and optional installation costs ($118+ for four units) are not included in today's Groupon, 3 Day Blinds usually delivers most of its custom-made wares in two days and can also summon a pro installer to clothe lintels without stress.

Irma: Once again, I would like to caution and warn all friends/family about using Making Waves Boat Rental - today's horrible experience was the final straw. They are unprofessional, insulting, idiotic, and completely the worst experience I've EVER had in a transaction. I would rank this up there with having to deal with an insurance company over an EOB. The WORST EVER. If you value your heart rate, san

Pam: I would avoid this company. I bought this deal in January and as of today 5/7/12 I still have not received the doll. It was over three months before I got the 1st email proof which looked nothing like the picture I submitted not to mention the paint job looked like a kid did it. Got final proof today. Looks nothing like my daughter, not even a little. It is NOT worth the time or money. Poor q

Brian: We recently purchased a seeding, aeration and fertilizer combo deal from these guys through living social. Scheduling the appointment proved to be a nightmare. Twice they no-showed without giving any kind of notice or explanation. They are not prompt at all to return phone calls and tend not to leave a message if they ever do call back. We ended up terminating the service and requesting a refund a

Spark: I purchased this deal and had to turn them away. Out of 19 bucks. They wanted to do only 1 hour of cleaning and not up to 2 hours as stated in the fine print. Also it would have been an additional 25 bucks for the pets even though it was only 1 hour of cleaning.

Tee: I feel that MedSlim is a complete scam!! After purchasing 3 treatments for $219, I was told that I see immediate results after the first treatment, but after 3 within the same week, there were no instant results as were promised, as a matter of fact its been since February and still no results. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY, it's a complete ripoff!!

M: I would NOT recommend Superior Touch Auto Spa. He claims to guarantee his work, but is very evasive answering and returning phone calls when he sells tint that bubbles up.

Cc: If I could give less than a single star I would. I bought a Groupon from this place and he refuses to honor it until I prepay a mandatory $40 gratuity fee via credit card. He also wanted an additional $10 because 11:30pm was too late to pick us up (even though the Groupon states up to midnight). Nowhere on the Groupon does it say prepaid gratuity is mandatory. It say "a 20% gratuity is suggested".
