Diekema Taekwondo garners its name from its sole instructor, Clint Diekema, a multi-black-belted champion martial artist who strives to bolster student self-confidence via daytime and evening kickboxing classes. All sessions, open to ages 10 and older, begin with methodical warm-up exercises and a rehearsal of some of kickboxing's core movements, such as threatening eye squints. After awakening hibernating muscles, a horde of defiant thai pads (padded shields that enable injury-free striking practice) emerges from the far corners of Diekema Taekwondo's 3,000-square-foot facility to challenge pupils as they practice kicking and punching as guided by their supportive instructor. After bookending the 45-minute class with additional kickboxing core movements, kickboxers leave with calories burned, more agile limbs, and the ability to adjust ceiling fans via roundhouse. Diekema Taekwondo offers both contact and no-contact classes as well as special martial-arts classes exclusively for women.
