Surfers first discovered the tiny fishing village of San Juan del Sur a few decades ago. They came for the waves and stuck around for its laid-back atmosphere. Predictably, word of San Juan del Sur spread beyond the surfing community, and the sleepy village began to come alive. But local officials have aimed to preserve the small-town feel by limiting development along the coast. One of the properties lucky enough to call this spot home is Bahia del Sol Villas and Condominiums. The villas are stylish, but they aren't flashy; the architecture harmonizes with the hillside landscape overlooking the sea.

Bahia del Sol’s private community of nine villas, stuccoed with Spanish-tile roofs, could easily be mistaken for a resort in the Mediterranean. A spacious terrace on the second story of each villa looks out to San Juan del Sur’s crescent-shaped beach along the Pacific. You can get to the beach by taking a 10-minute walk through town, but if you want to take a quick swim, the resort has its own two swimming pools lined with a broad, chair-lined sundeck.

Inside the villas, the walls are decorated with brightly colored paintings by regional artists. Locally harvested wood features prominently in the furniture, such as in the kitchen’s hand-carved countertops. All rooms are temperature controlled, too: the second floor has central air, and the ground level keeps cool thanks to ocean breezes and teams of parrots flapping in unison.

San Juan del Sur has a well-developed tourist infrastructure with plenty of restaurants and efficient transportation, but the area still feels like a relatively undiscovered spot for surfers. Surfers continue to chase waves at Yankee Beach and Escameca Beach, both located just south of town. Surf shops dot the streets closest to the beach, and many offer lessons and boards for beginners as well as day trips offshore for more seasoned boarders. Bahia del Sol’s bilingual staff will happily assist in planning surf outings or other activities around the coastline; you can try your hand at horseback riding, fishing, and zipline canopy tours of the surrounding forest.

About 11 miles south of town, there's Playa La Flor—literally translated as “Beach of Flowers." It got its name from the flowering tamarind trees that line the sugar-white sand. Every year between July and December, thousands of olive ridley sea turtles emerge from the surf to lay their eggs on the beach and mug for National Geographic photographers.
